What does your role as an apprentice involve?
In the three months I have been at ShelterBox I have been put on the ticket system meaning. I am one of three people who manages and completes tickets that are sent in.
I have been introduced into two main sectors that I am being trained to become the owner of, which is the Starter and Leavers process and managing the phone fleet.
I have mainly been doing admin related tasks which covers the users across all the countries we are working in.
Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I have always preferred the idea of working and earning over going to uni and wanted to find something to allow me to start in the working world while still being able to pick up skills and learn, so I decided that an apprenticeship was the best option for that.
How did Callywith support and influence your decision to do an apprenticeship?
I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do after college so the support from Callywith did help me with my decision, I was shown examples of apprenticeships and where they can take you. I was also able to book a 1 to 1 with the careers advisor and she showed me some options that were available and where to look for more.
What's the best thing about an apprenticeship?
The best thing about being an apprentice is that you get a first-hand experience of what it’s like to be in the working world with support all around you all while making a proper wage.
What are you hoping to do in the future?
I’m still not 100% sure what I’m going to do after the apprenticeship but it has already been brought up that the position might become permanent after the 18 months is over and on completing the apprenticeship you get a qualification that employers find appealing.
What are your tips for students considering apprenticeships?
For anyone considering an apprenticeship my tip would be to begin searching for them right now, I didn’t know what type of apprentice to go on so I just searched through all the topics I liked, you can read through the job description and see everything that you might be doing on the course so you can see if you like it or you can see yourself doing it.
