Destinations Day offers students insights into future pathways
In February, we hosted Destinations Day for our first-year students, providing a fantastic opportunity to explore the wide range of progression pathways available beyond college.
Throughout the day, students attended insightful talks featuring over 60 employers and institutions, including Babcock, Imerys, Idenna Creative, Mott MacDonald, Cornish Lithium, Bodmin Jail, Environment Agency, Paddle Cornwall Sup, Celtic Sea Power, Thrift Cornwall, Devon & Cornwall Police.
Students gained valuable insights into careers across various sectors, including nursing, veterinary, psychology, law, accountancy, architecture, photography, fashion design, marketing, PR, acting, civil engineering, games, film, sports coaching, social care, midwifery, police, teaching, and many more.
In addition to exploring career pathways, students learned about apprenticeship opportunities. Sessions included an apprenticeship talk covering different levels, and how to find opportunities, an apprenticeship workshop, and a ‘Meet the Apprentices’ session, where former Callywith students, now apprentices in fields such as accountancy, nursing and environmental practice, shared their experiences.
Students also explored alternative post-18 pathways including gap years and higher education, with presentations from University Centre Truro & Penwith, University of Plymouth, Plymouth Marjon University, Arts University Plymouth and University of Exeter. A ‘Meet the Students’ session allowed them to hear first-hand from university student ambassadors about their experiences and insights into student life. Additional sessions covered topics such as setting up a business, student finance and budgeting Next Steps South West.
Thank you to all the employers, higher education institutions, and organisations who supported the event and helped make it such a valuable experience for our students.
Following Destinations Day, we will be hosting a series of subject-focused networking lunches throughout the year. If you are a professional, organisation, or former student interested in taking part, please email careers@callywith.ac.uk.
