Why choose this course?
Studying politics will allow you to understand the structures of governance in the UK and around the world as well as analyse alternative views of how society could and should be run. In addition, the subject allows you to develop your skills in critical thinking and analysis, skills valued in Higher Education and employment. You don't need to have studied politics before or know anything about it but keeping up-to-date with political events in the UK and internationally during the course is important to be able to apply ongoing examples to the classroom.
What will I learn?
The course at Callywith College covers key aspects relevant to today's society. In your first year, you would study politics in the United Kingdom, including how our democracy and government works, the political parties within it, and the influence of the media and voters. Additionally, you will look at the differences in key political ideas including Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and Feminism. In the second year, you will look at how the world is governed - including different forms of governance from democracies to dictatorships, how nations compete and cooperate with one another, as well as the importance and limitations of international and supranational organisations such as the United Nations and European Union.
Assessment Arrangements
The course is assessed with three exams at the end of two years with each being worth 33% of your total. For each exam you will have to answer different essay questions - demonstrating an ability to form and develop an argument.
Where will it take me?
Students who study this course often go on to study History, Law, Politics, International Relations and Philosophy at University - all of which allow progression into multiple careers. Additionally, if you look at the leaders of the country and world today, you will find many of them have studied politics! Also, the course allows you to understand how to engage in local, national and international politics and will develop your ability to communicate and develop arguments effectively which are useful for any career you may wish to go in to.

What will I need?
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language or Literature at grade 6 or above.
