What will I learn?
You will study four units over two years, this includes two externally assessed units and two internally assessed units.
- Human Lifespan and Development (exam) – PIES and factors affecting growth and development, interventions and the different professionals providing care and treatment.
- Human Biology and Health (exam) – Human body structure and systems, normal physiological functioning and the impact of common disorders.
- Health and Social Care Practice – Core principles, values and legislation that underpin and influence health and social care, and the effect of social determinants on an individual health status.
- Health Science – Types of infections and their potential impact on a local, national and international scale.
Assessment Arrangements
The units are assessed either by external or internal assessment.
External examinations – all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome.
Set tasks internally assessed – learners take the assessment during a defined assignment window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.
Some external assessments include a period of preparation using set information. External assessments are available twice a year and students may have the opportunity to resit them.
For internally assessed units, assignments will be completed.
What will I need?
Health and Social Care is available to students with no previous experience of the subject. We would expect students to have five GCSEs at grade 4 or above and a 5 or above in English Language.
Where will it take me?
Successful completion of the course can support progression to degree courses in health or social care including nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, teaching, social work, psychology and youth work degrees and/or employment or training in the health or social care sector.
