Key information

Sport & Protective Services / Full Time / Level 3 Extended Diploma

Why choose this course?

The course will teach you to apply your sporting knowledge, as well as test your practical ability, by covering a range of units including Sports Coaching & Leadership, Fitness Testing and Programming, Sports Development and Practical Sports Performance. During the course you will take on the role of being employed within the sport and active leisure industry when completing assignments and activities. Each assignment will be based around a scenario which reflects tasks/projects that sports employees would be undertaking in the workplace. For example, a health fitness instructor conducting client health and fitness assessments.

Classes are taught through classroom lectures, group discussions as well as a variety of practical sessions using the extensive facilities at the College, including a purpose-built sports hall, fitness suite and 3G astro. There is also an opportunity to take part in industry recognised additional qualifications which will enhance your experience, skills and employability.

The course will particularly suit you if you enjoy learning in a practical environment, but also stretch you academically. It is an ideal route if you want to pursue a career in health and fitness , sports coaching or teaching. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A Levels.

Assessment Arrangements

Over the two year course you will complete compulsory assignments for the internally assessed units which could include written reports, presentations and practical demonstrations. The externally assessed units will involve formal examinations and controlled assessments.

Information & Support

As a vocational sports course, you will be expected to wear appropriate sports kit, which can be purchased from the college at an additional cost. Purchase is not compulsory, but we would expect one item of Callywith College kit to be available to wear when representing the college at external events.

Where will it take me?

This course prepares you for both employment and progression onto Higher Education courses. Common career paths for Sport students include Sports Coaching, Teaching, Sports Therapy, Sports Management and Fitness Instructing.

What will I need?

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 including a 4 in English (Lang or Lit.) and or Maths.

How are you finding your course/experience at uni?

University so far has been the best experience, my course is very interesting and rewarding, it covers a range of modules that are lecture theatre based or take place as practical lab sessions. modules that have stood out for me so far are Human Physiology, Anatomy and Kinanthropometry and Sports Psychology. University life in general is fantastic too, attending societies and socials always keeps me busy.

How did your time at Callywith influence and support your choice of/transition to university?

I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive College than Callywith. All my lecturers were very helpful and thorough in the process of deciding my future University. The College really made me believe in myself, that i was able to achieve whatever i set out to accomplish. the continued support from my tutor and lecturers enabled me to go for / succeed in getting a place at the University of Exeter.

What did you enjoy in particular about studying the Sport Diploma?

The level 3 sport diploma at Callywith was very enjoyable. One of the best things about the course for me was the constant interchange between practical and non practical sessions. I found this engaged me more as you can apply what your learning in class to practical scenarios. as a result of this, it also helped my understanding.

Why you chose to study your uni course?

I decided to study Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Exeter because a lot of the content within the course aligned with a lot of my own interests, to which I wanted a more in depth knowledge and understanding. (e.g., Physiological adaptations to exercise) in addition to this reading about postgraduate employment with this degree made it a clear choice for me.

How has your diploma helped you in your degree?

The Diploma for me was the perfect stepping stone to Higher Education. The Course introduced to me the concept of having to prepare for exams and meet deadlines for coursework, without this experience i would’ve found my transition to Exeter a lot harder.

What are you hoping to do in the future?

As of now, my main interest for the future is a career in teaching, i have recently chosen ‘learning and teaching in physical education’ as a module for my second year in the hope to further my knowledge and understanding of teaching.
